#NMFilm Clip: “War on Everyone”

Two corrupt cops in New Mexico, played by Alexandar Skarsgard and Michael Peña, set out to blackmail and frame every criminal unfortunate enough to cross their path. Things take a sinister turn when they try to intimidate someone who is more dangerous than they are. Or is he?

Director John Michael McDonagh (The Guard, Calvary) told The Hollywood Reporter about his decision to shoot in New Mexico, saying: “Earlier drafts of the screenplay were set in London and then Dublin, but they never felt quite right, either tonally or visually. It was only when I latched on to the New Mexico location that my vision for the movie started to cohere. It’s also nice to wake up in sunlight and not get rained on all the time. Plus, I like burritos.”

As for casting, McDonagh is known for selecting actors who don’t shy away from enjoying a few pints. Explaining the unique way Alexandar Skarsgard was tapped for the lead role in the film he said, “I actually cast Alexander [Skarsgard] not because of his great performances in Melancholia, Disconnect or What Maisie Knew but because I saw a YouTube video of him drunk at a Hammarby football match trying to incite the crowd.”

War on Everyone premiers at the Berlin International Film Festival this month.
