#NMStage: “Love in the DMZ”

The inaugural scripted, stage performance at SOL Performance Space will be the timeless story of forlorn love in a play by best selling author, Julia Cameron. A play in letters: “Love in the DMZ” promises a look into a pivotal love story – one that may be as transformative as the winds of change that whip through our own lives at any given time. As identifiable as a love story can be, this particular account places husband and wife enduring separation during the turbulent era of the Vietnam War.

In an enlightening sit down conversation with the cast, stage manager and director of “Love in the DMZ”, it was obvious that their passion for the material is effortlessly all-consuming, with deep connections to the characters and a great respect for the work they were hand picked to bring to life. Daniel Region was specifically tapped by the author to return to his beloved New Mexico from New York to lead this cast and crew. A multi-talented director, writer and actor, Region brings more than 35 years experience in the entertainment industry to the project.

Local favorites, Catharine Pilafas and Josh Heard star as husband and wife in the play Variety Magazine reviewed as “…sharp and poetic, Cameron’s writing keeps a believable balance between romance and reality. Her characters are intelligent and imperfect, three dimensional…compelling drama.” Not seen on stage since 2006, “Love in the DMZ” is now being proudly presented to modern day New Mexico audiences by true artists in a space that has been carved out and expanded to nurture artistic creation and inspiration by producer, Vivian Nesbitt (Co-Owner and Director of Sol Acting Academy).

Stars Heard and Pilafas, already so obviously fully immersed in their characters, are relishing the growth and development they’re privy to, delving into their roles during the long days of rehearsal leading up to the show’s open and throughout the run here in Albuquerque. Pilafas notes that, as in her yoga practice, she see’s the work and the presentation as an opportunity to “come in and meet yourself…” All agree it’s a place and a piece of work that lends to self-reflection and will provide the audience the all important opportunity to really “feel” – a sometimes lost practice which is as important now as it ever was in grappling with real human emotion against the backdrop of war or a warlike atmosphere.

WHAT: “Love in the DMZ” runs approximately 2:30:00 with intermission.
